Solid Internet
Okay I'm stressing out a bit lot here...

I could do with some advice from anyone who is savvy about domains/servers/email and transfers. Oh, and especially Solid Internet.

3 days ago my domain email wasn't working. Then I realise neither is my website or cpanel. I do some research and find out some shocking things.

EVERYTHING is down - my website, email, cpanel. Their support and client forums are also down. People have said some servers have been for weeks. There is absolutely nothing telling their customers what the hell is going on - I am very, very worried.

What I want to know is;

  • is it possible to transfer anything without access to cpanel?
  • while these servers are down, are my emails just getting lost in limbo?
  • anyone know any good, reliable hosts? I pay £20-odd for a yearly light package.

    Current Mood: stressed

Bit of a joke they've left their main site up, if everything else is dead and has been for awhile!

Hope it does all get sorted for you.

I've always kept my domains and webspace separate after having a few issues with hosts in the past.

I have a few pretty savvy techy go beep friends stateside, I'll ask 'em when I see em.

I've been using Compila for the past... god knows how long and they've been awesome with me.

But yeah, I'll ask around when I see people. This sucks so bad D:

Here we go. Asked a friend who does IT work in London. Hosted domains aren't her specialty but here's what she said:

[13:07] Emma: mrrr. that sounds ungood
[13:07] Emma: emails might be getting bounced back to senders if the servers are fully down and there's no sort of store and forward thing set up
[13:07] Emma: have they tried sending themselves an email to see what happens?
[13:08] Emma: they're not going to be able to get at their website data if the servers and the cpanel is down. i know very little about hosted websites though, and have nevarrr used cpanel
[13:08] kamara: no idea. shall send a comment to them. will also tell them that re: bouncing.
[13:09] Emma: might be worth trying to transfer the domain to a company that is alive. though i'm not sure if that's possible if it's registered to the old copany who aren't there to authroise the transfer from their end :s
    [13:09] kamara: mmm
[13:09] kamara: i suppose the best thing is to contact other-company's support and say "this is what's up. i want to move to you and give you money. halp?"
[13:09] Emma: yeah, that might work. they'd know what they need

    Thanks a lot Gem.

Oh man :\ I found this; http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1138662.html so yeah... I think the best bet might be to just move asap.

Okay compila - I actually still have my domain with them because solidinternet didn't take on domain names, only hosting. So, I'm hoping, maybe this will make things easier/possible if I were to move back to them...?
I'm gonna try their live chat support when someones available.

Okay, phew I've got my hosting sorted - upgraded to 'bargain'.

Since you're with Compila Gem, you might know this, depends on what package you're on though?

I have 2 other domains that are on namecheap.com that I want linked to this host - I can't see anything obvious on cpanel to do with domains (except redirects, might this be all that I need?) and I can't find anything on compilas site to tell me what I get with the bargain hosting, in case I need some extra features to do this.

If you're not sure, I'll just search more or contact Compila again.

Reeeeeally not sure, no. Fire off an email to support, they're rather nice and should get back to you fairly soon. I usually heard from em in like an hour or so during office hours.

I'm just talking to one of their support people - bargain only supports one domain. I'd have to pay £60-70 a year for a bigger package for 3 domains :\

I think I know why I had to leave them in the first place...! Guess I'll have to look elsewhere :(

Scratch that - they rang me and they have a redirect service I can use for them. Yay. So I will be sticking with them. Thank god! Lol.
